INSTRUCTIONS

The clean-up events organised as part of the Clean Beach programme are voluntary in nature and can be arranged as appropriate for the clean-up site or group in question. We have compiled some important issues to keep in mind when participating in the campaign and organising a clean-up event. To make the process easier, we have also put together a checklist for clean-up event organisers and gathered information on the bird nesting times during the spring and summer.

PROGRAMME COORDINATOR = KEEP THE ARCHIELAGO TIDY ASSOCIATION

  • Manages the coordination of the programme
  • Advises clean-up event organisers by providing instructions and tips
  • Manages all communications and marketing for the Clean Beach programme
  • Compiles the registration of clean-up event organisers and marks the beaches for clean-up on the programme website
  • Manages the dataset of litter collected at the event
  • Organises all supplementary activities and events for the programme

CLEAN-UP EVENT ORGANISER

  • Responsible for practical arrangements, such as:
    • Provides possible event refreshments
    • Arranges possible transportation to the clean-up site
    • Instructs clean-up participants on site
    • Provides possible clean-up equipment
    • Handles the sign-up process for clean-up volunteers
    • Ensures that all the litter gathered at the event makes it off the beach
  • Gains the permission of the landowner of the clean-up site
  • Considers the bird nesting times when selecting a clean-up site
  • Notifies the programme coordinator about the location of the clean-up site and possible list of participants
  • Acquires the necessary permits
  • Manages the size of the group; the recommended size for a clean-up event (max. 50 persons/beach) does not require any additional arrangements *
  • Serves as a link between the clean-up event participants and the Clean Beach programme team
  • Makes sure that the litter reporting information is submitted to the programme organiser

*Obligation to notify the relevant authorities: Clean-up event organisers are obligated to notify the police about any public event with more than 100 children or more than 200 adult participants. In this case, the event organisers must draw up a rescue plan for the local department of emergency services and deliver the notification of the public event to the local police. For more information, see the websites of the local rescue service and police departments.

CHECKLIST FOR CLEAN-UP EVENT ORGANISERS

We have assisted clean-up event organisers by creating a checklist of factors that are important to remember when endeavouring to organise a successful Clean Beach event.

Clean-up site

  • Ensure that you know whose land you are on and, if necessary, request permission to hold the clean-up event.
  • Visiting the site in advance will facilitate planning for the event.
  • Make sure that the site is safe and accessible for all participants.
  • It is a good idea to find out how the participants can reach the site using different modes of transport (public transport, car, bicycle, etc.).
  • It is good to know how well-equipped the site is: does the site have a dry/flush toilet, the possibility to enjoy snacks/picnics on site, etc.
  • Do not disturb nature. We kindly request that organisers observe the bird nesting times, which are at their peak during the spring.

Clean-up participants

  • Careful and thorough guidance guarantees a successful event.
    • Instructions on the appropriate gear for the event
    • Instructions on how to carry out the clean-up work
    • Instructions on how to report on the litter collected
    • Timetables and route guides
    • Information about issues related to the clean-up events
  • Motivation is highly important, both before and at the event itself. A happy and enthusiastic participant is the best event resource.
  • It is wise to keep the size of the clean-up group manageable. Advance registration for the event helps to anticipate the necessary need for notifications and permits.

Litter

When organising clean-up events, it would be wise to establish, in advance, the nearest waste disposal stations for all collected litter or the possibility to dispose of the litter in waste bins located at the beaches in question.

If necessary, the programme personnel can help you to figure out the best way to dispose of the collected litter. The clean-up group is primarily responsible for the proper transport and disposal of all collected litter.
